Why we love Gemma Arterton
For once, an actress who wasn't put in front of the cameras by luvvie parents. The daughter of a welder (father) and a cleaner (mother), Gemma Arterton had a pretty normal life in Gravesend, Kent, though she did go to grammar school, so is still posh. After that she signed up for drama college and somebody realised she'd look good as a sixth former, so she made her big time debut as a head girl in St Trinian's, reportedly beating Sienna Miller to the part. That lead to being Bond girl Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace, which in turn lead to a role inPrince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Gemma Arterton has the sexiest back in showbusiness and slept with Mackenzie Crook in poorly received British comedy Three and Out, while also getting nominated for a BAFTA for both her lead roles in Tamara Drewe, and the criminally underrated The Disappearance of Alice Creed, which is really excellent and thrilling. Find it in the ‘thriller’ department. So what next? Other than being really pretty and totally nice and down to earth, according to videos we’ve seen. Well, Gemma Arterton has loads of other massive films coming out, which is as good for her as it is for us. Except she’s getting paid. Anyway, top of the exiting list is Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, in which she plays Gretal to Jeremy Renner’s Hansel. Director Tommy Wirkola describes it as "it's an action-adventure horror movie that finds Hansel and Gretel fifteen years [after their first witch incident] and they've grown up to become merciless witch hunters. Blood and gore and action." Sounds alright, eh?
